2017 NT State Pairs winners
This year saw a good increase in entries for both the Men and ladies competitions which culminated in a fiercley competitive event for both disciplines.
The Ladies competition saw last years winning duo of Colleen Orr and Carolyn Smolski beaten in the last sectional round by Lurleen Vickery and Lynne Hayhow to be knocked out of contention with Arlene Foley and Barb McNiell grabbing the finals spot with a 13 shot advantage over Vickery and Hayhow. Both teams had three wins.
In Section Two, a draw in Round Two between the Catherine Farrell and Barb Taylor combo and Tammy Hyatt and Narelle Trimble cost them dearly giving Sue Aumann and Louise Kitto a two point and eleven shot lead after the final round to allow them to face the Foley/McNiell combo in the final. Aumann and Kitto put their stamp on the final early taking the final and the Championship 19/8. a great win for the Nightcliff and Darwin combo.
In the Men’s pairs Championship, four sections fought it out for a coveted semi final spot with Alan and Ethan Maher facing Steven Douglas and Mark Malogorski, and Ian Smith and Mark Diamond facing Trystan Smallacombe and Graeme Kitto.
The first Semi saw Steven Douglas and Mark Malogorski lose a tight battle to the Maher combo with the game in doubt until the last bowl. Alan and Ethan Maher winning 13/11.
In the remaining Semi Final Trystan Smallacombe teamed with Graeme Kitto to account for Ian Smith and Mark Diamond 17/13, also a top match to watch.
The final saw the Smallacombe/Kitto duo hold onto their lead over the Maher father and son combo throughout to win 16/12 after the final end. The game was of a very high standard with some fantastic shots made by both teams.
